Richmond Golf Guide

Richmond Visitors who wander the streets of Richmond, Virginia may feel as though the pages of a history book have magically come to life. The past is so palpable in this cosmopolitan city that travelers may be tempted to leave their clubs behind, so they have time to explore Monument Avenue, the Museum of the Confederacy, the Virginia Capitol Building, the Virginia War Memorial and the Dinwiddie and Pamplin Historical Park.

Or they may go the cultural route and visit ARTWORKS Studios and Galleries, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Either option-or both-is perfectly fine, but skipping the golf in the area would verge on a criminal act.

More than 20 courses decorate the region, and visitors can tee it up on the A.W. Tillinghast-designed Belmont Golf Course, where Sam Snead won the 1949 PGA Championship. Or they can sample the fairways of the Providence Golf Club and First Tee Chesterfield, both public, or the semi-private expanse of Glenwood Country Club.

And if golfers manage to get themselves onto the Golf Club at Brickshire, a Curtis Strange Signature course that has earned 4 ½ stars from Golf Digest readers, they will play replica holes from the Old Course at St. Andrews, Augusta National, Pinehurst #2 and Riviera County Club. Not bad, considering that Richmond is far easier to get to than all of those locations combined.
